The “Midnight Rider” achievement in Left 4 Dead 2 is very straightforward; just complete (and survive) the entire Dark Carnival campaign and make it into the escape vehicle alive and you’ll earn the Midnight Rider achievement. As with all campaign-completion-based achievements, it’s easiest to gain this achievement on Easy Mode, since you have a greater chance of surviving the finale.
Since Left 4 Dead 2 is sometimes a bit buggy in terms of players joining campaign that’s already in progress, you should start your own Dark Carnival lobby, host locally or simply play through the campaign on Single Player mode to guarantee that you gain the Midnight Rider achievement.
Note: You need to survive the finale to earn the Midnight Rider achievement. The achievement is named after the rock band whose stage pyrotechnics signal the rescue vehicle in the Dark Carnival finale, and is a reference to the Allman Brothers’ song “Midnight Rider.”
