I don't know who it was that decided that chainsaws were a good weapon against the undead - I can't think of a worse weapon for killing zombies than a chainsaw.
Think about it! Chainsaws are very dangerous - they often turn on their users, causing injury or death (followed, most likely, by undeath in this particular situation).
Add into that the fact that zombie blood may spread the zombie contagion, and that airborne particles of blood could easily enter your lungs like tuberculosis, cutting a zombie up with a chainsaw seems VERY DANGEROUS! We all watch CSI, we all know how much blood goes up into the air.
Take my advice: NO CHAINSAWS AGAINST ZOMBIES!!!
Chainsaws are a BAD IDEA!!!

I agree with you.
Here's my take on the chainsaw. It's a fantastic cinematic weapon for the hero. When you don't have to worry about the real threat, you can feel free to wield the chainsaw in great dramatic arcs, severing heads, limbs and the like. This is just good cinema. We're talking about real zombie threats here though and you want something efficient, clean, and above all something that doesn't require fuel. That, to me is the biggest problem. Ammo is bad enough, but gasoline?
The great Ash can pull off the chainsaw, but even he has his trusty 12 gauge Double-Barreled Remington, and his cutting wit.
As I've said in other posts though, my Louisville Slugger is never further than arms reach, just in case.

Didn't even think about the fuel...
Gee, you ever notice how they never show the people filling up their chainsaws with gasoline in zombie movies? I never really thought about that until just now...
And you couldn't really smoke while using a chainsaw, wouldn't be safe, so I'm definitely not using one. I gotta smoke when I kill zombies.

Smoking and zombies
For sure, Chester - I've always wondered why zombies and cigarettes aren't sold together - I mean, they were practically made for each other!

coolness factor
chainsaws are cool in the movies, unless you're that chick from the DotD remake. i'd like to kill at least one zombie with a chainsaw, but i'd also like to live, i'll take what i can get.

That Chick in the Dawn of the Dead Remake
Yeah, that chick in the Dawn of the Dead remake totally got it from that chainsaw - that was one of the points when I realized it was a bad idea. Cadaver recently pointed out that they require gasoline, which is something you almost never see in the movies...
Yeah, forget the chainsaw. Too messy.

Re: Chainsaws are a BAD IDEA!!!
I must agree. Chainsaw is a bad choice. Is heavy and has small mobility, and yes,it may turn against you. And it may simply stop in the middle of the fight! And in less than a second you get overruned with zombies. I think that a crowbar,a shovel,or an axe is a lot better.

Agreed...chainsaws are definitely a terrible idea. Not only are they going to spray blood EVERYWHERE, they also create a TON of noise which would only attract more and more zombies. I would go with something way more silent and clean.
