What would your top 10 items be in a survival situation?

What would your top 10 items be in a survival situation?

Scenario: You have seen reports of zombie activity on television and you have to make a dash for supplies as you are running low, What are the 10 items you would choose, explain your choices.

1. Rations - Small high in nutrients items, means less encumberence and are more benificial to the body.

2. Baseball bat, classic all round weapon.

3. Medical kit, Could be unneccisarry but its better to be safe, Would contain paracetamol, Bandages, sewing kit ect.

4. Swiss army knife, Usefull in any situation.

5. A Wind up radio, If anyones broadcasting messages, it might be benificial to listen they could contain important information, Use with headphones to minimize battery life and noise output.

6. Flashlight with extra batteries, You will need one of these if you are traveling around at night although only use them when you need to as they could attract the undead. Could also be used for SOS signals.

7. Contacts numbers and ID/Passport - If you do get to a safe place and its military run, theres a good chance they are going to know who you are, The Numbers could come in usefull and you could have them on a notepad on which you can make notes of other important issues.

8. Water purification tablets, If this would be an apocoliptic zombie invasion, you probably stand no chance of surviving but if its on a smaller scale say a city/county these would come in handy. You dont want to be getting ill at a time like this.

9. Extra clothes, Raincoat, socks and boxers. Hygiene is important, if you fall ill your chances of survival are virtually none.

10. Cigs :P Because im addicted and they would be a lifesaver!

It's hard to choose, but I would probably go with-

1- Food (Obviously)

2- Flares (Hey, you never know...)

3- Gasoline (Set something on fire about a block away, and run while the zombies are distracted)

4- A bicycle (Quick departure with no need for fuel)

5- Fire aid supplies (Dieing = Bad)

6- A pistol or rifle (Killing = Good)

7- Radio (A wind up, naturally)

8- A map of the area (Know where I'm going)

9- Pen and Paper (For writing notes, to-do lists, floor plans of the safehouse, etc.)

10- Clothing

I RUN! and dont hold up. my idea is to keep with what i can hold on myself, while i scavenge the other things like food and BOTTLED water.

1 weapons: baseball bat, guns, machete, knives

2 jacket, warm clothing

3 lighters, matches

4 fireworks: imagine; on the run. you come across a horde of zombies that you see, but dont see you. you have no where else to go. what do you do??? throw some firecrackers, and bottle rockets away from them, and just walk past

5 face covering: gas mask, bandanna, painters mask

6 identification

7 multi tool: a set of pliers and a can opener could come in handy

8 first aid supplies

9 credit card: while it lasts, it would be great. you don't need to worry about debt anymore. but you may still need some access to working gas pumps if any.

10 binoculars: if i need to get to a high place to evaluate the land. i should be able to see pretty far

I agree with blue_wire. I'd stay on the run, so I'd probably just keep the items small so they could fit in a backpack:

1. multitool - these things have a lot of helpful features... my dad uses his all the time

2. my katana - I'd wear it on my hip for melee combat

3. crank radio

4. some non perishable food items like beef jerky - like blue_wire, I'd try to rely on scavenging other food and water

5. handgun with many extra clips - I'd reserve this weapon for only emergency situations

6. matches - of the waterproof variety

7. binoculars - again, blue_wire's got a great idea with this one. I would like to do a little reconnaissance before moving into an area

8. bottled water

9. extra set of clothes

10. first aid kit - not much one can do if one is bit by a zombie, but could be useful for non undead issues.

I'm going to reiterate a lot of what has already been said, but some items are in face tried and true in survival situations. This kit is mobile. Something that'll fit is a medium sized internal frame weekend pack. Sizable, but still relatively non-cumbersome and maneuverable.

1. Multi-Tool/Swiss Army Knife

2. Food - Probably compacted field rations. High Calorie, low volume, moderate weight.

3. Water Purification Tablets - The majority of weight in a pack is food and water. This will cut down on that. Water may or may not be easy to find where you are. That being said, Number 4 is...

4. Water - A few of the survival pouches for emergencies. In case you are in a pinch and cannot find running water for any reason. This should be there to hold you over.

5. Flashlight - I would reccomend that you don't carry something too high powered. A 4D-Cell Maglite is not going to be weight efficient, and the batteries are going to be very heavy if you carry too many. A smaller light, AA powered Maglite would be good enough for survival I believe. After all, I believe the saying goes, "Even a 2 watt bulb in a pitch black room is light enough." There's another reason as well, which I'll cover in the next item.

6. GPSr - A good hand held unit, with solid maps of your area, and perhaps the country. This won't keep you from the zombies, but it will tell you exactly where you are. Good information if you need to know where a lake, river, town, or anything in the map database might be. I would think something that is not rechargeable, but that takes AA batteries. You can begin to see where I'm going with the batteries here.

7. Radio - AM/FM/Shortwave. Perhaps with an emergency crank, perhaps not. Definitely AA battery power in addition to the crank. That would be ideal in case you do run out of or low on battery power.

8. Batteries - As many good quality AA batteries as you dare to carry. Wal-Mart sells them in 36 packs, and I would have three or four of those. Heavy? Yes, but they are a very important resource. You could carry less, and try to pick them up in abandoned stores, but I'd rather carry as many as I could in the mean time.

9. First Aid - A good travel kit. Something that will cover you in any situation. Naturally zombie bites are not covered, but if you keep your self healthy and mobile, you have less of a chance of acquiring one of those. I will definitely have a kit that has a bottle of aspirin, good bandages, antibiotic cream, etc.

10. Weaponry - Last but not least, your defenses. I have said, middle of last year sometime that I'd carry my Louisville Slugger, and a high calibur handgun. Ammunition for the gun would have to be carried in there somewhere, and that'd probably be 11 on my list. I wouldn't carry too much of it, but enough to be conservative and make it last awhile. My plan is to skirt the zombies with mobility, and not mow them down with brute force.

So there's my top 10. I know this thread hasn't been posted to in awhile, but then, I haven't logged in for awhile either. I have some catching up to do. Anyway, I'm back. :) Hi all!

I agree with you, but, the tent is a bad choice, since the zombies can slice it and get you really easy. I recommend a barricaded room, but with an emergency escape point, just in case(but be carefull, you must make sure the zombies can't use that)

Well i think i will not focus on searching, and "camping" I will be moving all the time, only few, short stops to rest and feed.

I would take with me this :

1. Water - is really needed to survive.
2. Food - small rations, lot of sugar for gain of energy.
3. Flashlight\Batteries - You need this at night.
4. Gas mask - Face protection for preventing infection by blood.
5. A shotgun\extra ammo - Best for small/medium range.
6. Passport - Just to show who I am if I reach a military base,or something like.
7. An army knife - Multiple use.
8. Some more clothes.
9. A lighter - you don't know when you need a fire.
10. Backpack - To hold my things and everything usefull i find.

Personal Tips:

Keep moving! - Never stop and try to fortify yourself. Is a bad ideea. Once you get spotted, the zombies will overrun you.
Don't try to be a hero! - Seriously, you need to get out safe and in one piece.Help only the survivors you can,if they were bitten, shot them.
Two better than one! - Try to unite with more survivors, share supplies, fight the infected. That will increase the changes to survive for everyone.
Avoid big groups of zombies - You may run out of ammo, try to distract them.
Don't hurry - Think,you have a brain,zombies don't. Use it.
Be creative - An apparently useless item can save your life.

Sorry for my poor english.
