Staying you will not survive.

Ah, the age old question. Do you stay holed up in your relatively safe, reasonably fortified home, knowing that could face eventual zombie siege or do you strike out on your own, knowing that you're at the mercy of uncountable undead?

Staying you will not survive.

Zombies really only have two three things going for them.

1. Persistence (I can not stress enough this is their number one attribute)

2. Great numbers

3. Difficult to kill unless at a very close proximity

Staying put, no matter your defenses (save for an ideal position such as a prison or army base with adequate defenses) put you at a great risk.

You may go a long time without being discovered by Zed's or Human enemy but eventually (if you stayed holed up) probability states you will be found and the hordes will begin their migration towards you. In metro centers you will eventually be dealing with thousands of zeds and the number will continue to grow. Mountains of zombies will eventually match the high of any barricades or will simply defeat them all together.

Now I am also not saying a nomadic life would be without consequences. Most of your stress in that sense will be never achieving a state of rest. This will lead to insanity or at least complete exhaustion.

Somewhere in the middle of staying and going would be ideal. Keep everything packed everywhere you go with the ability to bug out in a moments notice.

A small protected caravan (of motor homes and ATVs) hidden in a faceless warehouse in an industrial (and therefore less populated) area would be my choice.

If we speak for a second about rural (and I mean rural) you could likely survive for generations if you found an appropriate hiding place and were not followed at any time in your journey.

Always when moving a group use a zig zag pattern that at some points doubles back on itself and then leads to your hideout. Then if someone or something does follow they may loose your trail.

i like your idea of staying and going....on a constant move in search of a fortified structure you feel entirely safe in....
i especially like the caravan use of ATV's and motor homes (which i hope you mean Recreational Vehicles and not huge trailer homes!). anywhere the RV can't go, the atv's can. coming across an obsticle on a main road (which would be inevitable), one would park the RV, pack the atv's with supplies and head to the nearest fortified shelter. the atv's could rush back to the rv and continue to take supplies back and forth.....

this could work for awhile, however, there are a few flaws in this.
the sound of motors and bright headlights would attract all of the nearest zombies....
again, the obsticles in the main road, one might have to ditch their vehicle in an effort to avoid getting eaten...
and, the idea of having a constant supply of fuel to run the vehicles seem a bit of a stretch...

Max Brooks seems to think that, believe it or not, the Bicycle is the best way to travel during the Plague.

Run!!

Postby Wookiejuice » Mon Jul 09, 2007 2:00 pm

I definitley agree with both of youse guys! I would run, until I could find the ideal place to stand my ground, preferrably where more survivors are too. The more people there are, the better your chances, I would say. I love the idea of a military base, but my only concern would be if there are ample supplies there. Lots of firepower no doubt, but what about food and water?

I suppose if one is r.v.'ing, then one could bring these supplies along. Or, like I mentioned in another forum, if one is at a military base, then one could arm themselves, and (hopefully with more survivors) then go for a food run to the nearest supermarket.

Cool, I could probably stay... Either that, or I wouldn't have to go far.

I live in the middle of nowhere, (Out in Saksatchewan, Canada) and there probably isn't more than 500 people living within a two kilometer radius.

Howdy Neighbor!

Postby Wookiejuice » Tue Jul 10, 2007 12:57 pm

Hey Labine! Glad to see another Canadian who is getting prepped for the zombie invasion. My fiance is from MooseJaw, and I've travelled through Saskatchewan on my way to Calgary before. You may be onto something there. The land is totally flat, so one could see the army of undead a long way off, and then react accordingly.

I read about World War Z on wikipedia yesterday, and people flock to Canada to escape the zombie plague... except no one realizes how cold it gets up here! So a lot of 'em die from exposure, and food gets scarce, so they resort to cannabalism. Sounds pretty crazy. Definitely looking forward to reading that book.

yes, you might be all alone right now...but one of the most likely places people will run is north...into Canada and following them would be a crap ton of zombies!

head on down here guys, Idaho is a laughingstock and would be immediately, and almost assuredly without reason, completely disregard us. Even though we are excessively well prepared.

I agree with Dragko - a semi-nomadic lifestyle, with your important provisions and a bug-out kit ready to go at a moment's notice, is probably the safest route to go during a zombie outbreak. We've got to keep in mind that you'll be under threat from humans as well as zombies, who might be trying to shape the new world order in their own image, or just steal your food and your women.

One way or another, you're going to want to keep on your toes, and keep moving - not stay in one place for too long, but maybe stake out and plan out several places ahead of time and rotate between them, checking upon each return for any signs that other humans have been by since the last time you were there. Locations overrun by zombies should be abandoned and new ones planned out, and major cities should probably be avoided at all costs.

Just my thinking on this one.
