Dead Rising

Here's another one that's gotten some attention lately in our zombie Forums.

Dead Rising was so similar to George Romero's original Dawn of the Dead that later editions of the game were required to print on the cover that there was no connection between the two. Apparently somebody in Romero's camp didn't approve of the game.

I've got to say, having seen it played for a while, I can see why. They kind of focus on the worst aspects of being in a mall (the limited locations you can go) and don't really make those areas detailed enough for them to be a lot of fun. Essentially you spend most of the game running through the same areas, saving people and doing time-sensitive missions.

Dead Rising is one of those games that you're supposed to play more than once; the problem is that after you play it once it doesn't really look like you'll want to play it again for a while.

Still, though, if you like killing lots and lots of zombies, this is the game for you. It's like Dynasty Warriors, but with zombies, in a shopping mall.

What I'd really like to see for a sequel is to take the same idea (slow, shambling zombies in very large numbers) and apply it to a much larger city map - sort of a ruined wasteland, GTA sort of thing, open-ended, but full of zombies - some places so bad you can't really go there.

Now THAT would be cool.
