I think the important element when it comes to deciding whether to stay in your home or to leave in the event of a zombie attack is going to be the nature of the zombie attack - and the only way for you to know that is to keep appraised of the situation as it happens.
I think that in the event of a small-scale invasion, say under a dozen zombies, probably most people's houses could be made safe simply by retreating to the most secure area (attic, basement, wherever) and waiting it out.
On the other hand, larger zombie attacks usually start as smaller zombie attacks, so the dozen zombies you think you're fleeing from could very quickly become dozens, and from dozens to hundreds.
I think that the most important thing for you to do when preparing for zombies, or for any disaster, is to keep as appraised of the situation as you can. A hand crank radio will allow you to maintain contact with others despite lack of power, and several of them sold by survival websites offer some pretty awesome integrated features (lights, etc).
If you've got something like that, you can keep track of what's going on from the safety of your attic - but at the first sign of media blackouts or government cover-up, it might be a good idea to get out to a defensible before A) zombies get you and everyone else or B) the government nukes you and everyone else.

Run!!
You know, I can see both of your points, if it's just a small outbreak kinda' deal, then just stay home. But man, I just don't like the idea of staying holed up in one's home... just waiting. I would definitely take that crank radio, but would immediately go on the run. I can always come back if it was just a small outbreak. I just prefer the idea of having more options in the open, rather than making a stand at the house.

i agree with wookie juice.
although with where i live (a crowded suburb area in Utah) it probably is not the safest place to be. but Utah has some less crowded places better to go to
at the first sign of a zombie invasion, i get my supplies, pile them up in the suv, and hit the road, evaluating the situation as i go, so i can tell how much time i have to get away from the outbreak.
i like the idea of evaluating the situation so i can tell whether it is a local outbreak or a large scale outbreak.
