I was watching the Military Channel last night (no, I'm not one of those guys, I just like watching things blow up), and they had a special on the Top Ten Rifles of all time...
It was like a zombie-primer, man! They ran down the ten best rifles from top to bottom, listing ammo, stopping power, availability and everything else...I was glad to see some of my favorite rifles up on the list.
At #1 though? The Kalashnikov, AK-47. Ubiquitous, indestructible, with ammunition widely available both inside and outside the United States...
I've got to say, watching that show, listening to them talk about the AK-47 and how superior it was in the jungle combat of Vietnam, that was when I realized that you need, above all else, a gun that's going to last a long, long, long time. Get yourself an M-16 and it's going to take you a week to learn to take care of the thing and use it properly. You can be an AK-47 expert in 4 hours.
So that's what I say - when it comes to an assault rifle, I'd go with the AK - you can integrate it into your gear or use it to carry gear when you're not killing zombies with it...

AK?
The AK, 'eh? Hmm, sounds good to me. Isn't that Russian made? Can't remember. But who cares about that? As long as it's killing zombies, it's fine wit' me!

Re: The AK-47 - Ultimate Zombie Firearm
While the AK is definately a great weapon, i wouldnt mind having one in an anti zombie situation, if i had a a choice, id take a M4 type AR-15 setup like one of those ones i own.
There are several reasons for me.
1. its lighter, weight becomes a big issue when hauling it for a long time.
2. the ammo weighs less and so you can carry more.
3. mags changes are a big pain in the a$$ on the AK, much quicker and easier on the AR system, would hate to try and change AK mag with its terrible lever release and stupid need to "rock" the mag in a life and death situation. Unlike the AR push button right on magwell mag drops free, push in new one, push bolt release, done.
4. easy to shoot, flatter shooting high velocity trajectory, makes it more of a point and shoot, especially at medium ranges. Off hand unsupport shooting is pretty easy. with a nice red dot hitting pie plate size targets (read zombie head) isnt too hard out too a 100 yards. take up a nice support postition and the AR is good out to 500+. Something the the AK cant do that well.
5. this isnt the m16 of nam were it was issued without a cleaning kit, in a jungle and was told to the troops it was self cleaning. the jamming is no where near as bad as it was, a little bit of cleaning and your set, especially in an enviorment around where i live.
6. Probably the biggest plus, with a nice rail system like i have, its totally modular and mission specific. I can quicky and easily change lots of accessories to match my needs. need a bi-pod, no problem, want a forward pistol grip, no problem. Want a flashlight mounted, sure thing. Want a red dot sight or a scope, can switch in seconds.
The AR isnt perfect, you do need to keep it clean, but thats easy in a non sand, jungle area. The AK is great and id def take one, but id take the AR over it.
just my rant
edited to add: I agree with railfun below, this would be semi auto AR, not full auto, no need vs a zombie, waste of ammo.

I'm agreeing with everlast, but for different reasons. The AK would provide some advantages over the M4 (not needing to be cleaned and/or repaired as often, plus it's easier) but there is one weapon that I almost never hear mentioned. THE RIFLE a good, long-range, hunting rifle. find a fixed position, some supplies and you're set for days. Some hunting rifles are good up to 500 yards, let your targets come to about 100 yards and with you sitting on the top of a hill and accuracy and survivability won't be a problem. where I live go into a house in the country (my town is 2500 people, roughly half farmers) and you can't help but find some 30'06 ammo, which believe me, has more than enough power to kill a zed. Any machine gun on full-auto would be a severe waste of ammo against zombies.

Man, that is a serious weapon.
What about ammo availability on a long-term basis? The nice thing about the AK is how easy it is to find ammunition for it. I'm thinking, in a long-term Zombie siege, there will potentially be no more new ammo manufactured for years (potentially ever), so you'd want to have the gun that comprises quality with quantity, so to speak.
Now, where can I get myself one of those, Everlast?
