I think farm equipment or a bulldozer would be a good thing to have around, but in the interest of exploring other ideas, what does anyone think about explosives? Maybe pipe bombs or something to that effect. Coupled with a good vehicle an explosive may provide the room you need to escape, or perhaps an untraversable crater. I'm not that familiar with the possibilities.
I'm not necessarily suggesting that we all keep prepared bombs in our homes, but the materials are available to have just in case the outbreak happens. I can think of pros and cons for this siege busting idea, but I'll just post the idea for consideration and see what everyone else has to say in the interest of generating some discussion. Talk amongst yourselves!

My thoughts on Explosives Vs. Zombies
OK, here's my thinking about explosives used against zombies:
One thing we must always keep in mind - to effectively kill a zombie, we have to destroy the brain or break/sever the spinal column. Now, here's the problem with most conventional explosives: they're not designed to kill like that.
Most of the mil-spec stuff that people see, land mines and things like that, are actually designed to cripple and incapacitate, thus leading to your enemies wasting resources trying to help the wounded, getting wounded themselves, etc. Against zombies that might actually put us at a disadvantage.
I think we'd need to find a specific kind of explosive that would be especially effective against zombies. Here's what it would need:
1) High velocity shrapnel, propelled approximately at zombie head range. If the stuff's exploding around their zombie knees, all you'll end up with is zombie bits all over the place and crawlers - the last thing you want.
2) Directional blast capability. It's no good if you're going to explode along with the zombies. Some charge-shaping would definitely help, and that can take some time and planning.
3) Ignition. Chances are that we're not going to have remote blasting caps lying around the house, which dramatically reduces our options for exploding zombies without exploding ourselves. I don't want to be the guy that has to open up the front door and toss out a flaming tank of propane...
Plus, they're dangerous to make and use! And remember, if they don't kill the zombies, you're left with Flaming Zombies, and I maintain that [b]Flaming zombies are the worst kind of zombie[b].
Anyone out there have any thoughts on a slam-dunk zombie explosive solution?
