About an hour north of here there is a themed bed and breakfast called Ravenwood Castle. My wife and I stayed there a few weeks back, and assuming that we have enough warning, that's where I'd likely go. It is truly a castle. Thick cinderblock walls, a fully provisioned kitchen, and plenty of balconies and rooftops. It is indeed a ready made fortress. The trouble is making it there of course, but given that we have the warning, that's where we'd go.

Castles are Awesome for Zombies!
Cadaver, I'm moving out where you live. I'm in Massachusetts over here, and the closet thing for zombie defense I think we have to that is Plymouth Plantation - one of those places where people pretend like they're still living in the 1700's. They're probably the only people less prepared for zombies than the average American.
But now that I think about it, we do have an old Armoury in Natick that's basically built like a castle...and there's a nice Greek restaurant right next to it we could raid for supplies...but they don't have a moat

Hey, if you need to get to Ravenwood, just make sure and announce who you are and we'll get you in. Sounds like that armory would work though. You know, this is probably something for the Zombieness board or something, but here's a thought:
Are there any easily reachable islands up that way? I think islands have been tried in movies before, but I can't remember for certain. Do you think Zombies would/could cross that much water?

Again, I defer to Brooks
I used to be a big fan of the island concept - but then I read Max Brooks' World War Z and that made me rethink them as a catch-all solution.
Brooks posits that not only can zombies live underwater, they'll continue to be a threat and will require constant coastal security for years after the outbreak has died down...
On the other hand, he credits Cuba with being the island nation that rode out the zombie plague completely and became the post-war breadbasket of the world...so I could go either way on islands.
I will say this - I don't think that water in and of itself poses a barrier to zombies, although boats floating in water might be significantly safer than islands, with the exception of the limited nature of resources on a ship...
What I always think, though, is this: I'm probably going to be fighting off more than zombies...and in that case, an island might really come in handy...
