Here's what I say - when the zombie infection happens, you need to high-tail it to the nearest outdoor store - or better yet, the factory or the warehouse where they store the stuff before they sell it.
It's a good place to hole up - better than a damn shopping mall, anyway.
But you shouldn't really have to leave your place - if you're already ready before the zombies come!

Stay Or Run
That's a good point Chester. Be prepared. However, staying at one's place is only a good idea if your place is defensible (obviously). For example, my house is not a good place to hole up in. It is in a rough end of town, so all the windows are barred, except for a huge picture window in the living room. It's only one storey too. For me personally, I would rather take up defense in something better.

Giving up our Homes to Zombies
See, that's how I feel - I think that in the event of a disaster like a zombie outbreak (or any other natural / unnatural disaster), many people would be reluctant to leave their homes.
Homes give us the illusion of security. We act like the walls that protect us, primarily, from the elements, will also protect us from each other - and that's just not the case. I can't think of a single house on my block that could be defended against other humans - zombies or not.
That's the thing about the United States - we have a lot of illusions about the power of "our land." The truth is, zombies don't respect property boundaries, they don't swarm in pre-approved locations, and they certainly don't have a problem smashing through any one of the plate-glass living room windows that line my street...
If something as bad as zombies does happen, we need to be ready to abandon our homes, if only temporarily, and seek survival elsewhere. In countries like Lebanon, this is the generally accepted way of life...

Giving up our Homes to Zombies
You know, that is so true. Many people do feel that their home is their castle, and they're safe there. Something I also thought of, along with being preparred, is to be sure that your loved ones know your plans too. My fiance would definitely want to bring our 2 cats with us, along with both of our dogs, but geez, I think having to worry about all of those animals would only slow us down. I mean, I could take the dogs, but the cats I would want to leave behind. They should be able to take care of themselves.
On second thought, I don't think taking my Jack Russell along would be wise. She would bark at every single zombie she saw, giving away our position. She would try to attack one too, and become a quick snack. Anyway, my point is, that I need to seriously convince my fiance to leave the animals behind, unless we can figure out a way to reasonably and safely bring them with us.

I was talking about this in the one story homes thread also. My main floor is probably not a good option, but my attic and my basement are excellent. I am considering the installation of a steel access tunnel between the attic and basement and leaving the main floor out of the equation entirely. I can definitely defend small barred windows and an iron padlocked door in the basement, and provisions can be kept in the attic and basement as well. I don't know whether they would break into the first floor if there was no activity there or not, but I know the basement is fairly good for defense, and the attic has some height for observation and signaling rescuers (roof access is good for that)

Dogs, Zombies and Ladders
I know they don't seem like they belong together, but really I think they do. The thing about dogs is that I think they're smarter than we give them credit for - especially a Jack Russel. Could a dog be trained to hunt / guard against zombies? Not a bad thought, actually...
I think that a combination of factors is important to stay alive: height, early warning, resources and escape potential. Ladders, especially the kind just described (leading from basement to attic) aren't a bad idea at all, especially since it allows for escape routes via the roof...

Hmmm, I never thought of that. Training my Jack Russell to hunt/guard? You may be on to something here. I guess they could be valuable companions to have, with the right training. I love the idea! I'd better get training her now then... right now, she still thinks she's the boss, and it's hard to get her to obey... *sigh*

that's not a bad idea, however, how many hundreds, or thousands of people will have the same idea....and by the time you get there...the place is stripped clean except for a few jock straps and some duck calls?
