My ranged weapon of choice is a compound bow which I will always choose over any melee weapon. Unlike guns a compound bow uses arrows which can be recovered easily after any battle. It is also lighter and easier to repair than a gun. Now in the case of more zombies than arrows then you should take out your melee weapon but we should all try to avoid these encounters. Another good thing about bows is that you can use the ammo as a melee weapon but the arrows would b used as daggers instead of spears of course. The only circumstance in which I would use my gun is if my base is being attacked but with a good defense plan they shouldn't be able to break through it in a single attack.
