The Gorillaz and Romero Zombie Movies
So has anyone else noticed that The Gorillaz, or at least one member of the Gorillaz, seems to have a fascination with Zombie movies? Specifically George Romero's zombie movies - Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. The original Dawn of the Dead, of course.
On the first Gorillaz album (self-titled), the song M1-A1 features a sample from the soundtrack of the opening sequence of George Romero's Day of the Dead. In the movie, a man holding a megaphone is calling out to an empty city, while zombies awaken to the sound and slowly shamble toward the source. Romero's soundtrack is seriously awesome, and clearly the Gorillaz know this because they use a very long, looping sample of it to make up the first half of the song.
On the Gorillaz second album, Demon Days, they sample the original sountrack from the American theatrical cut of Dawn of the Dead - specifically the ominous woodwind section from the infamous "truck sequence" in Romero's original Dawn of the Dead. It's a spooky sequence and the Gorillaz blend it in with the sound of police sirens to create an atmosphere for the entire "Demon Days" album.

You know? .... for a group of cartoon characters the "Gorillaz" really do put out some really great "horror themed" music. And did you notice that the new album is even "harder"? How cool.
